Christopher Saliba needs little introduction. With 25 years of active artistic practice, he has established a distinctive presence in Malta’s contemporary art scene through a multidisciplinary body of work spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, etching and photography.
Highlights of his career include exhibitions at the National Museum of Fine Arts and St James Cavalier, as well as participation in an exhibition at the European Parliament in Brussels. His work forms part of Malta’s National Art Collection and the collection of Malta International Airport. More recently, his three-metre public sculpture, Encounter, was permanently installed in Gozo through the Ministry for Gozo and Planning’s Public Art Scheme, adding a contemporary landmark to the island’s cultural landscape as Victoria prepares for its role as European Capital of Culture 2031.
Saliba’s artistic language moves between abstraction and landscape, combining intuition with structure, carefully considered compositions with spontaneous gestures. Particularly recognised for his signature red paintings, he explores the expressive potential of colour, texture and the physicality of the painted surface. His distinctive textured grounds and gestural brushwork reveal an enduring interest in material, process and the human touch.
Alongside abstraction, the Maltese and Gozitan landscape has remained central to his practice. Over the years, he has witnessed the transformation of familiar places under the pressure of development and the passage of time. His paintings often present these landscapes as timeless spaces, suspended in stillness and devoid of human activity. Through Mediterranean light, expansive horizons and dramatic contrasts, they invite contemplation while drawing attention to the fragility of the natural and cultural environment.
His practice extends into ceramics and sculpture, where minimalism, symbolism, colour and material presence assume different forms. Across these disciplines, Saliba maintains a consistent interest in the relationship between intuition and discipline, the tangible and the contemplative.
Exhibitions including Red is the Colour, Skylines and The Silence of Light reflect the continuity of his artistic vision and his ongoing exploration of colour, light, texture and place. His work balances expressive freedom with compositional rigour, while responding to the changing world around him.
