COLLECTIVELY SOLO|2020 EXHIBITION
To the Lighthouse - Alexia Coppini
Coppini is a Maltese painter who creates fantastic seascapes and ethereal skies. They represent the natural environment in the most tranquil manner. Alexia lives by the sea and is therefore easily absorbed by it’s beauty and the natural environment. Alexia's paintings evoke a sense of the spiritual as well as the fluid nature of the sea, and the light in the air creates a play with memory in timelessness. Her interest in art started when she was at school and continued later in life. Alexia studied art under the guidance of Ms Margaret Chircop, her art teacher at the Convent of the Sacred Heart. During these years she developed her talent and later discovered that life could be better fulfilled through artistic expression that gives satisfaction not only to herself but also enjoyment to whoever shares in her work. Later in life Alexia attended art courses by Mr Anton Calleja and Ms Debbie Caruana Dingli. The artist is versatile in various subjects, which include portraits, still life and animals. She also has a great passion to draw and paint images from marine and landscape. For her the natural environment is a great source of inspiration.
Henry was never comfortable following traditional and 'proper' art paths. Instead Henry thrives on individualism, and off-the-beaten path practices.
Steve is a self-taught artist with a bent for quirky, humorous and sometimes dark themes.
As an artist, Jeni can track the feeling of what is going on around her through her colours and sensitivity, her ability to draw quickly and the sheer joy of the moment.
Winston has a natural talent for drawing and painting the local environment, a self-taught and versatile artist who works with most mediums.
Sarah describes the action and experience of en plein air painting as a "fight against time and the elements" offering her an ever growing array of subjects and inspirations.
Debbie's favourite medium is Oils on canvas and her works are characterised by spontaneous and loose brushwork. Various themes feature in her work, vast landscapes, seascapes , nude studies, and
object drawings
Andrew Borg is intrigued by capturing interesting shapes, tonalities and moods from an off-beat angle and any source of these facets would be enough to tempt him towards painting
"She forges ahead with powerful vigour. She can hardly repress her profuse creative outpouring. Her expressionism knows no bounds and she brooks no rivals." E.V Borg
Vella Clark’s works have been described as expressionist, but although he is mostly known for his bold ‘abstracted’ interpretations of the Maltese urban and rural landscape, his works have been gradually gaining a more abstract dimension
Calleja’s work, which is all painted in situ and features land and seascapes from around the islands, is a tribute to changing seasons, the temperament of nature’s elements, and the transcendent experience of exploring the physical world through paint. Seen for the first time in a collective setting, these quasi-abstracted scenes transmit the familiar sights and sounds of the Maltese islands without being shackled to the realms of the literal. Gallery 23 is excited to present a body of work that will act as a sense-driven trigger, eliciting unmistakable memories of particular places and moments whilst allowing viewers their own space for contemplative interpretation.
